According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Kia will recall approximately 70,000 Sorento and Sportage SUV models between 2016 and 2023. They also advise owners to park outside if their tow hitch is defective and poses a fire hazard.
This recall is an expansion of the August recall by the Korean automaker, in which owners of certain Kia Telluride SUVs, approximately 36,000 in number, were advised to park outside due to a similar problem. The recall also covered 245,000 Hyundai Palisade SUV models.
According to the NHTSA, the affected models are the Sorento model year 2016-2022, Sorento Hybrid years 2021-2023, and Sorento Plug-in Hybrid years 2022-2023. Kia estimates that only 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.
According to the NHTSA, three fires were confirmed in the Sorento models that were recalled, along with 30 “localized melt incidents,” but there have been no fatalities, injuries, or crashes.
You can either buy an accessory or have a tow-hitch harness installed on these vehicles. According to the NHTSA, moisture and debris can build up on the circuit board of the tow hitch harness and cause a short circuit.
Dealers were told to stop selling tow hitch harnesses.
Kia said that it is still looking for a solution, but would notify owners about the second course of action between November 14 and Nov 18.
